Work hours in a year
The 2,080-hour year is a convention: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. It is what converts a salary to an hourly rate and what many employers use to set PTO accrual per hour. Real years are slightly different. 2026 has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 a day, and nobody works every weekday: vacation and paid holidays come out of the total, even though a salaried employee is paid for them.
Worked example (pre-filled). A 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 scheduled hours. Taking 10 vacation days and 10 paid holidays removes 160 hours, leaving 1,920 hours actually worked, an average of 160 a month. That is the figure to use when working out what a salary is really worth per hour on the job, or when budgeting billable hours.
Georgia does not require paid vacation or holidays for private-sector employees; how many you get is set by your employer (Georgia DOL). For a 37.5-hour week the scheduled year is 1,950 hours; for four 10-hour days it is still 2,080. Formula and assumptions
hours off = (vacation days + holidays) × hours per day
hours worked = scheduled hours − hours off
- Weeks per year defaults to 52; a calendar year is 52 weeks plus one or two days.
- The weekday count is exact for the year entered and ignores holidays.
