Hours in a biweekly pay period

A biweekly schedule pays 26 times a year, every other week, and each paycheck covers two full workweeks. A standard full-time period is 80 hours (2 × 40), which is where the "80 hours biweekly" figure on job postings comes from. Part-time and shift schedules vary, and this calculator lets each week differ.

Worked example (pre-filled). Week 1 is five 8-hour days (40 hours). Week 2 is five 9-hour days (45 hours), so the period has 85 hours. Because overtime is evaluated per workweek, week 2 carries 5 overtime hours even though the two-week average is 42.5. At $22 an hour, the period's gross pay is $1,925.00.

Georgia has no overtime law of its own; the federal FLSA rule applies: non-exempt employees earn 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, with no daily overtime requirement (Georgia DOL). An employer cannot average the two weeks to avoid overtime (29 CFR 778.110 figures overtime on "hours worked in excess of 40 in the week"). Frequently asked questions

How many hours is biweekly full time?

80 hours: two 40-hour weeks. Over a year that is 26 periods × 80 = 2,080 hours.

Is overtime calculated on 80 hours biweekly?

No. Overtime is owed for hours over 40 in each workweek. 50 hours one week and 30 the next produces 10 overtime hours even though the total is 80.

How many biweekly pay periods are in a year?

26 in most years. Some years have 27 biweekly paydays depending on where the first payday falls; the paycheck calculator assumes 26.

What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly?

Biweekly is every two weeks (26 checks); semi-monthly is twice a month (24 checks). A semi-monthly period averages 86.67 hours for a 40-hour week; a biweekly period is always 80.
