What time and a half means
"Time and a half" is a pay rate of 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. It is the overtime rate the Fair Labor Standards Act requires for hours over 40 in a workweek, and it is the rate many employers choose, voluntarily, for holidays or weekend shifts. In Georgia the FLSA rule is the only overtime requirement; the state has no law of its own (Georgia DOL).
Worked example (pre-filled). At $15 an hour, time and a half is $22.50. Five hours at that rate pay $112.50: $75.00 of straight time plus $37.50 of premium. With 40 regular hours ($600.00), the week's gross is $712.50.
Two details matter when the rate is not a simple hourly wage. First, the multiplier applies to the regular rate, which includes shift differentials and non-discretionary bonuses, not just the base rate (29 CFR 778.207); use the shift differential calculator for that. Second, holiday pay at time and a half is a matter of company policy, not law: federal and Georgia law do not require premium pay for working a holiday, only for hours over 40 in the week.
Time-and-a-half pay is withheld like any other wages. The overtime guide covers the 2026 federal and Georgia tax breaks on the overtime premium.
Formula and assumptions
pay = rate × 1.5 × hours
premium (the extra half) = rate × 0.5 × hours
- Rate is assumed to be the full regular rate.
- The chart lists rates from $10 to $50; the calculator accepts any rate.
Frequently asked questions
What is time and a half for $15 an hour?
$22.50 an hour. Multiply $15 by 1.5. Ten hours at that rate are $225.
What is time and a half for $20 an hour?
$30 an hour, and double time is $40.
Is holiday pay time and a half in Georgia?
Only if the employer’s policy says so. Neither Georgia nor federal law requires premium pay for holidays; overtime is required only after 40 hours in the workweek.
How do I calculate time and a half for a salaried employee?
Convert the salary to an hourly regular rate first (weekly salary ÷ hours the salary covers), then multiply by 1.5 for each overtime hour if the employee is non-exempt.
